What the law says

Annual leave rules in the UAE.

Entitlement: 2 days for each month of service after the first six months, and 30 calendar days a year after one year of service. Part-time workers are entitled in proportion to their hours.
Leave salary: your full wage, which is basic salary plus the allowances that apply (housing, transport, other fixed allowances), divided by 30 for each day of leave, paid before the leave starts.
Unused leave paid out when employment ends: basic salary only, divided by 30, for the days you have earned but not taken. Being paid for leave while you still work there follows different rules.
Carrying leave over: allowed by agreement with your employer, within the limits in your contract and company policy.

These rules come from Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. Free zones such as DIFC and ADGM, government employees and domestic workers are covered by different rules.

Worked example

Example: AED 5,000 basic, AED 2,000 housing, 30 days.

Leave you take: (5,000 + 2,000) ÷ 30 × 30 = AED 7,000.
Unused leave paid out when employment ends: 5,000 ÷ 30 × 30 = AED 5,000.
